Sports Card Gradings 10-Point Grading System

The Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) 10-point Grading Scale was created as a guideline for grading sports cards. This scale was developed by a group the leading sports card experts twho recognized for the trading card industry to exist, to an industry-wide grading system was needed. The PSA 10-Point Grading Scale in now the standard for the industry and is accepted by professional card traders’ collectors, and leading auction houses around the country.


The Following defines the attributes of the 10-point grading scale

 

GEM-MT-10 The card rating attributes for a gem mint 10 is a virtually perfect card. include four perfectly sharp edges, sharp focus, full original gloss. The card must be free of staining of any kind, but an allowance can be made for a slight printing imperfection, if it does not impair the overall appeal of the card. The image must be centered on the card within typically not exceed 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front, and 75/25 percent on the back.


MINT-9 The card rating attributes for a mint 9 is a superb condition card that exhibits only one of the following slight flaws: a very slight wax stain on back, a slight printing imperfection or slightly off-white borders. Centering must typically not exceed60/40 to 65/35 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.

NM-MT-8 The card rating

is a super high-end card that appears Mint 9 at first glance. But upon closer inspection, the card can exhibit the following: A very slight wax stain on back, slightest fraying at one or two edges, a slight printing imperfection and/or slightly off-white border.
Centering must typically not exceed 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.


NM-7 The card rating attributes for a Near Mint 7 shows slight surface wear is noticeable upon close inspection. There may be slight fraying on some edges. Picture focus may be slightly off. A slight blemish is acceptable. Slight wax staining is acceptable on the back of the card. Most of the original gloss is retained. Centering must typically not exceed 70/30 to 75/25 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.


EX-MT-6 The card rating attributes for an Excellent Mint 6 may have noticeable surface wear or a printing defect which does not detract from its overall appeal. A very light scratch may be detected only upon close inspection. Edges may have slightly graduated fraying. Picture focus can be slightly out of register. Card can show some loss of original gloss, may have slight wax stain on back, may exhibit very slight notching on edges and can also show some off-whiteness on borders. Centering must typically be 80/20 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.


EX-5 The card rating attributes for an Excellent 5 show very slight rounding of the edges that is becoming evident. Surface wear or printing defects are more noticeable. There can be slight chipping on edges. Loss of original gloss will be more apparent. Focus of picture can be slightly out of register. Several light scratches can be noticeable upon close inspection, but do not detract from the appeal of the card. Card can show some off-whiteness of borders. Centering must typically be 85/15 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.


VG-EX-4 The card rating attributes for a Very Good to Excellent 4 might have edges that are slightly rounded. Surface wear is noticeable but modest. The card can have light scuffing or light scratches. Some original gloss will be retained. Borders can be slightly off-white. A light crease can be noticeable. Centering must typically be 85/15 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.


VG-3 The card rating attributes for a Very Good 3 card shows some rounding of the edges, though not extreme. Some surface wear will be apparent, along with possible light scuffing or light scratches. Focus can be somewhat off-register and edges can exhibit noticeable wear. Much, but not all, of the card's original gloss will be lost. Borders can be somewhat yellowed and/or discolored. A crease can be noticeable. Printing defects are possible. Slight stain can show on obverse and wax staining on back can be more prominent. Centering must typically be 90/10 or better on the front and back.


G-2 The card rating attributes for a Good 2 edges show accelerated rounding and surface wear is starting to become obvious. A good card can have scratching, scuffing, light staining, or chipping of enamel on obverse. There may be several creases. Original gloss can be completely absent. Card can show considerable discoloration. Centering must typically be 90/10 or better on the front and back.
